Experiential museum tours and workshops at the Jalasjärvi museum

20.6.2024

This summer, the goal of Jalasjärvi 4H is to increase especially children's and young people's interest in local culture and the history of their home region by offering experiential museum stories, activity workshops and nature experiences. In the Experience Paths project, the presentation of the area of the Jalasjärvi Homeland Museum is developed using a variety of methods.

The purpose is to make the home owner's cultural heritage better known with new, storytelling methods. Museums must respond to people's needs and produce new kinds of experiences. Stories are a functional and nice way to tell children about life in the past and it gives them new tools to process new information.

Role-playing tours and workshops with changing themes are organized at the museum on Wednesdays until the start of school. Participation in them is free of charge.

- For example, a kite-making workshop will be organized in July, for which pre-registration is required. Treasure hunting coming up on August 7. and you can practice writing with a quill pen on 17.7. says the project manager Mari Mäki-Karvia.

Now there are three event days behind us, each of which has had enough visitors.

- The Event Days have been well received and people have been interested. Both adults and children have enjoyed themselves, says the chairman of the Jalasjärvi Society Hilkka Haapamäki.

- In the treasure hunt that was already held once, they especially liked the metal detectors, even though some of them didn't find the treasure, says Mäki-Karvia.

More can be achieved through cooperation

The project is implemented at the Jalasjärvi Museum in close cooperation with the Jalasjärvi Society. According to Mäki-Karvia, the cooperation has gone really well.

- The group has been interested in the event dates and they are involved in the arrangements.

The goal is that tools will remain after the project from enlivening the museum area, which can later be used in the museum's presentations and events. During the project, we will see how the narrated museum tours work and what else interests children and young people at the museum. Various activity workshops such as traditional games, traditional crafts, treasure hunting with metal detectors or ghost walks can be carried out even after the project.

- From this, the museum gets the model of how to organize a program aimed at children, says Mäki-Karvia.

The project also includes making signboards for the route around Lake Lamminjärvi.

Below you can find out about 19.6. to the organized activity day through pictures.

Mari Mäki-Karvia and Hilkka Haapamäki encourage you to visit the Jalasjärvi museum this summer.

- It's been lively and fun. Museonmäki can accommodate you, welcome. This time of year is the best to come. The buildings are pleasantly cool in the summer, Hilkka Haapamäki says.

Going to school in the past is illustrated with guided tours with stories, which young people have been hired to lead. In the project, it is possible to offer young people interesting things to do and short project-like works, when they can carry out the cultural heritage presentation themselves.

- It's great how young people live up to their roles, praises Mäki-Karvia.

Free guided tours are organized every hour on Wednesdays. You do not need to register for them in advance.

Several young people work in the activity workshop. Pictured are Eerika and Olivia. Flower arrangements resembling miniature meadows were made in the workshop.

In the activity workshop, you could also make your own sauna stove. In addition, during the day you could watch the making of a willow pipe.

A large number of authors are needed for the activity days. This time, everyone has time for coffee at the same time. In the photo, the instructors of the workshops, hired young people, the people of Jalasjärvi Society and an employee of the Elämyspolut project.
