Ylijoki

Ylijoki is the southernmost village of Nurmo, with more than 200 inhabitants. From there it is 27 km to Seinäjoki and 5 km to the Vaasa – Jyväskylä highway. Nurmonjoki flows through the village, which begins at the confluence of Åhvenjoki and Lehmijoki at the southern end of the village. Three roads and bridges connect the parts of the village located on both sides of the river. The landscape is rolling, and the forest islands rising from the middle of the open fields make it particularly attractive. The village has milk and mother cow production and other business activities. A large number of people of working age work outside the village. Sights include Pasto's old mill and the oldest building on the old school property, which is Nurmo's former parsonage from 1766. The parsonage was moved to Ylijoki as a public school in 1898. It is known to be the oldest residential building in Nurmo.

Services

A library van visits the village once a week. In the village, there is a furniture store, machine contracting and holiday cottage rental.

Common spaces and hobby opportunities

Ylijoki-seura bought its own village hall as a meeting place, where the girls' and boys' clubs of the congregation, the pensioners' circle and the diaconia mission circle operate. It is held there, e.g. sales, church events and civic college courses. Agricultural and household women and the Ylijoki society gather in the farm. The village has a lighted toboggan run with a ski track in winter. There is also a playground, a frisbee track and a sports field with a hockey rink in the winter. At the edge of the field is the dressing room of the village club. In addition, the club owns a lodge together with the Koura hunting club. Many villagers belong to the Koura hunting club, which has a hunting lodge and a shooting range right on the border of Ylijoki and Koura.

Construction sites

Beautiful, new houses have been built in the village in recent years. You can still find nice house sites, but you have to ask the private owners for them. The village does not have a building plan. Old houses come up for sale from time to time, but often they remain family summer residences.

Village events

The Ylijoki club annually organizes summer sports and fishing competitions, as well as a tail container butterfly. Especially at Easter and Christmas, we gather for church events.

Strengths

Good teamwork and togetherness, beautiful landscapes and relatively short commutes.

The most important areas for development

Road paving (Ylijoentie all the way to the end and Kalliokoskentie all the way). Improving telecommunication connections.

Avoidable threats

Population aging and decline. Deterioration of traffic connections. Deterioration of community spirit as opportunities for hobbies and gatherings decline.
