Learn about AI sustainability with a free online course

14.8.2026

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the world of work, but it is also raising questions about its environmental impact. Many people are considering the sustainability of using artificial intelligence in their own work. A new free online course will introduce you to the topic.

The new online course “Sustainability and AI” addresses the different dimensions of the sustainability of artificial intelligence. The course consists of four video lectures and a related optional assignment. The lecturer of the course is Sara Pyykölä, a doctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki.

In the course you will learn:

  • What is sustainable AI and how to use AI to promote sustainability?
  • What does artificial intelligence require to function and what factors affect its footprint?
  • How artificial intelligence works technically
  • How can you apply what you learned in the course to your working life?

The course provides general information on the background factors of AI sustainability, but is specifically aimed at entrepreneurs. The course is published as part of the GENGREEN project, which aims to support SMEs, especially female entrepreneurs, in their competence in sustainable business through education and Nordic networks. The project is funded by the European Union's Interreg Aurora programme.

Sustainability and AI course at DigiCampus (requires login)

The course has been published on the DigiCampus platform, a common platform for Finnish higher education institutions. Access to the platform requires registration, for example with a Google or Haka account, after which the course can be accessed via the link above. The course is free of charge, open to everyone and can be completed at your own pace. The lectures are in English. The course is a continuation of the previously published course in the project for the AI Course, which covers the basics of artificial intelligence.
