The Lakeuden Forest Management Association, operating in the Ilmajoki, Kurikka, Kauhajoki and Teuva areas, has already attracted over four hundred participants to trainings, demonstrations and excursions in the Lakeuden forests. In addition, the project offers forest owners free advice without any obligations for the forest owner.
A record number of forest-themed events will be held this coming spring. Information and advice will be provided in the form of events and field trips on topics such as forest taxation, earning money through carbon sequestration agreements, timber trading, nature values and taking game into account, growing peat forests and mixed regeneration of spruce and pine. In addition, new highly popular generational change evenings are planned for the autumn. After all, this topic will remain relevant as long as family forestry is practiced in Finland.
Project manager Rami Mattila also hopes to receive contacts from new and future forest owners. For example, if the family has been considering ownership change issues, then within the framework of the project it is possible to get to know the forests in transition and examine where the most urgent maintenance work, the most profitable investments, the most profitable renewal sites and the most interesting natural values can be found. At the same time, it is possible to go through both “office work” and things that can be observed in the field, i.e. examine taxation issues and learn during a field visit how to determine the need for thinning in a young forest.
The project can also discuss ways forward with those who have owned forests for a longer period of time, for example if they feel that they do not know what to do with their forest property. There is often no single right answer in forest matters. It all depends on the values of the forest owner. By listening to and understanding those values, good solutions can certainly be found for all situations.
